UNEP

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) helps the world deal with major environmental problems such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution, and the need for sustainable development. Since its creation in 1972, UNEP has been an important part of the UN, bringing countries together to work on environmental issues, supporting international agreements, and encouraging cooperation between governments and other partners. It provides a key space for nations to discuss and act on environmental challenges.

UNEP also advises the UN by giving policy recommendations on urgent environmental matters. Its goal is to promote sustainability, encourage the responsible use of natural resources, and create a safer and healthier environment worldwide.

Today, global institutions are reshaping how countries work together, while also facing new and complex environmental and political challenges. Within UNEP, these institutions play a central role in tackling problems that cross national borders—such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. However, coordinating effective action can be difficult, since it requires balancing different national priorities, finding resources, and ensuring that agreements are followed.
